For Majima’s business venture he has to turn a struggling cabaret club into the hottest spot in Sotenbori. (there’s also the… cat fights, but we’ll get to that later). Shakedown, but you better be confident in your skills to do so. You can also try your luck at defeating Mr. Other alternatives are beating on enemies that randomly appear off the street to challenge you or you can sell items off to a pawn shop. In Kiryu’s story you will be in charge of your own real estate company where you buy up property and in turn, try to make a profit off of it. Thankfully you have multiple ways to earn income. The only way to upgrade is to spend money on new abilities, some of which requires millions and millions of yen. If you just wanna settle things the old fashioned way (aka your fist) you will have to upgrade your fighting styles. Not going to line there is something satisfying seeing a man get pummeled with a traffic cone. Guns, swords, bicycles, salt shakers, chairs, and a traffic cone. Each of them have their strengths and weaknesses, but don’t be afraid to get experimental and try out the weapons. Majima has Thug (again the more balanced style), Breaker (where you use a variety of dance moves to take down a horde of enemies) and Slugger (where you wield a baseball bat to give you a little bit of an edge). The three you gradually unlock for Kiryu are Brawler (a nice balance), Rush (a more fast paced move set that works best against lone opponents), and Beast (ideal for crowd control and literally makes use of objects). When it comes to combat you have four styles for Kiryu and four Majima (the fourth style for each of them is unlocked after completing a certain storyline). Usually those segments are saved till the climax, but once the foot is on the gas pedal for action it goes full speed. Thankfully the ending of Chapter 1 makes up for it by storming clan headquarters where you fight off what felt like a hundred men. In the first half hour the game will have you slowly walking from place to place, listening to loads of dialogue, teaching you how to fight, then back to walking from place to place. I don’t mean that in a “It gets good after the first ten hours” kind of way. Our opening takes its time introducing new comers to Kamurocho, and I mean REALLY takes its time. It helps that our two protagonist, Kazama Kiryu and Goro Majima, seem like blank states, but the more you traverse down this crime driven narrative rabbit hole the more there is that meets the eye. The Yakuza franchise (and its many spin-offs) have tackled these approaches by taking every ridiculous situation absolutely seriously. ![]() ![]() Many forms of media like games, movies, and comics always try to find that balance between super serious and utterly ridiculous resulting in a product that gets lost and doesn’t know what it is trying to be. ![]() The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games List Please use flair to display what games you’re currently playing, not a punch line, username, tag, URL, or signature.
